CHAPTER EIGHT

“SARA?”

It was then Sara realized the loud sounds in the other room had stopped and Mary was calling for her. She turned away from Edward and went out the door into the hallway. “I’m here,” she called, and saw Mary coming toward her.

“You’ll never guess what happened. The pizza company that’s donating the food said they’ll provide as much as we need, no limit. Isn’t that wonderful?” she said.

“That’s great,” Sara said, then realized that Edward was right behind her.

“Oh, there you are,” Mary said to Edward. “Did you get a chance to look at the paperwork?”

“Can I take it with me?” he asked.

“Absolutely. I don’t need to make a decision until tomorrow or the next day.”

Edward was right beside her now, and Sara felt him brush her arm. Then she caught a peripheral glimpse of the blue folder in his hands. “I’ll get it back to you tomorrow, then?” he said.

“That would be great. I’m just no good when it comes to legal stuff.”

“I’ll get back to the children,” Sara said, and she hurried into the main room. Thankfully Edward left moments later, striding past without glancing at where she sat by the tree. She exhaled a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding, then went to get Hayley and head home.

Edward didn’t show up at the restaurant the next day, or at the center, and Sara was just beginning to relax a bit. She was helping Hayley and Victoria pick up toys after the other kids had all left, and glanced at the clock. It was almost six. Soon she could leave.

Mary called out to her. “Sara?”

She turned and felt her chest tighten. Edward was standing there. She hadn’t seen him come in this time, either. He wore his leather jacket over a gray collarless shirt, along with jeans and boots. He looked the same as always, but her reaction seemed to get more intense every time she saw him. She hesitated crossing to where the two of them stood, but short of ignoring Mary, she didn’t have a choice.

“I was just putting away the last of the toys,” she said to Mary. “And everyone’s been picked up but Victoria.”

“She’s staying with me for a while,” Mary said. “And I needed to ask you for a favor tonight.”

She wanted to tell Mary that all she wanted to do was go home and crawl into bed. Instead she said, “What do you need?”

“Hayley. I offered to watch Victoria for Rain and Jack, good friends of mine. Big things are going on with them,” she said with a smile. “They need time to make plans for their new life, and Victoria would love to have Hayley come join us, if it’s okay with you. We’re going to do some serious artwork here and order food. I’ll bring Hayley to your place....” She glanced at her watch. “How about by eight?”

Sara had met Rain—a psychologist who looked a bit like a hippie—when she’d come to pick up Victoria one day.
